Question by Lisa S: what should I be looking for when viewing a 90 yr old house?
I am going with a realtor to see a house built in 1928 tomorrow. The roof was replaced 7 yrs ago, the current owners are carpenters at heart and have added many nice touches such as trim, and closet doors made out of cedar. Remodeled bathroom, kitchen, and bedrooms. It could still use a little tlc but only cosmetic. The house looks like the Walton’s house, it has 6 bedrooms, living rm, dining rm, 2 full baths, kitchen w/ dishwasher and a cellar. The property includes machinery barn, 2 car garage w/ woodstove, elec., and water, a small fishing pond (used to be a stock pond) all on 3.8 acres. The only problem listed on the paper work is the cellar gets wet every time it rains and a sump pump is essential. Asking price is 105,000. New homes on a lot are between 100 and 150,000 around here. What do you think? Oh and its about fifteen minutes away from shopping etc. I think it sounds great, but my boyfriend keeps saying but its an old house. And I can expect many problems with it.
Sorry I guess I should have added within last 13 years bathrooms and kitchen completely remodeled. Windows, electric, also updated. The owners are getting elderly and are moving out of state to be closer to family. Yes I would have a detailed inspection. Thanks for all the great tips I dont want to walk in there and not see any clues do to my inexperience.

I’ve got two $ 500.00 suits I need to protect. I’m already using cedar hangers. Will moth balls cause my suits to smell of moth balls? I cleaned all the clothes. Is there an alternative method to moth balls?

I usually castrate the closet moths when I catch them and add to my collection of moth balls.

cedar closets sale and Why have a Cigar Box?

cedar closets sale:

Question by Jaremo: Why have a Cigar Box?
So I bought a cigar box from a yard sale a few weeks back because I recently began smoking cigars. When I went out and bought some cigars, the guy at the store put them in a ziplock bag and said they should last a week in there. After doing research online, I read you should preserve cigars in a humidor so they last. Is there any real purpose for the cigar box then? I mean, if I kept them in the box for a week instead of the ziplock bag, they’d most likely dry out, right? (the temp in my closet is around 70 but humidity is nowhere close to what it needs).

I am just trying to figure out if the box was even worth getting. It smells like a cedar wooden box, large enough to fit maybe 8 cigars. It’s held closed by a small latch, and it’s 95% sealed around the whole thing (there is a miniscule gap at one corner). It also has on the inside strips of wood that go around all the sides. The strips are a little taller than the actual outside of the box, probably to keep it more sealed.

A Look at cedar closet doors in Rotten Egg Smell in finished basement.?

cedar closet doors:

Question by love to be a mommy of 2: Rotten Egg Smell in finished basement.?
Right now my husband, our two children and I are living at my mother in laws basement temporarily, However, since almost a week ago, I have been smelling a foul odor in the basement, and it hits you once you open the door, the problem is I can’t pin-point exactly where the smell is coming from. The smell is strong in the cedar closet, and the stairs, but it seems that the smell is everywhere. There is no bathroom downstairs, or sink, and I have the baby’s diaper pail empty. I have cleaned everything, almost obsessively to try to get rid of the smell. This really isn’t my house so I am not sure what else to do, can anyone help, or have any ideas as to what it could be?

Best answer:

Answer by Saul B
I had that experience with a house I recently bought. During the inspection we noticed that there was a rotten egg odor coming from one of the drains (the basement is unfinished). If you can find out whether or not there is a drain in the basement floor that may solve your question. Sometimes the seals underneath the drains wear out and that leads to sewer gas backing up into the pipe… generally there should be a water trap in the pipe that will prevent this but that’s not always the case. If the smell is coming from an area with a drain I would call a plumber to come take a look at it.
