Question by love to be a mommy of 2: Rotten Egg Smell in finished basement.?
Right now my husband, our two children and I are living at my mother in laws basement temporarily, However, since almost a week ago, I have been smelling a foul odor in the basement, and it hits you once you open the door, the problem is I can’t pin-point exactly where the smell is coming from. The smell is strong in the cedar closet, and the stairs, but it seems that the smell is everywhere. There is no bathroom downstairs, or sink, and I have the baby’s diaper pail empty. I have cleaned everything, almost obsessively to try to get rid of the smell. This really isn’t my house so I am not sure what else to do, can anyone help, or have any ideas as to what it could be?

I had that experience with a house I recently bought. During the inspection we noticed that there was a rotten egg odor coming from one of the drains (the basement is unfinished). If you can find out whether or not there is a drain in the basement floor that may solve your question. Sometimes the seals underneath the drains wear out and that leads to sewer gas backing up into the pipe… generally there should be a water trap in the pipe that will prevent this but that’s not always the case. If the smell is coming from an area with a drain I would call a plumber to come take a look at it.

If it were me i would put in a sub floor. I all so would put in spacers of about a inch on any wall that the closet will be next to i would make a box out of 5/8 osb and line the in side with cedar closet kit you can buy at almost any big box store depending on the size of closet you are wanting it may take 2 or 3 of the kits I did one in my home and it is 12″ long 6′ deep and 10 ‘ high and i really do enjoy it.

Home centers have kits for this but if he can build a wall he can do it. Four walls or 3 if against existing watt and take it to existing ceiling. You can buy cedar wood panels to line the walls with, not a hard project.
