Question by shoppits: How can I get rid of the musty smell in my old house’s built in storage areas?
I have two nice linen closet type built ins that have drawers underneath them. They are on the floor right above the crawl space. The house was built in 1925. When I put my linens in the upper shelf area they absorb a musty smell and I can’t sleep on them, I’d have to wash them before using them.
The shelves and walls inside were painted over after I got the house but that didn’t help. Below the bottom drawer on one of them is sub floor which looks like it may have openings to the crawl space (?), I could close that off I guess. And on the other one the bottom drawer was taken out and that space is used as an air return for the heater and goes directly into the heating duct.
I’m not convinced that closing off the bottom will help since they both have the smell and also some furniture I bought at a swap meet did the same thing to my clothes.
Is there something to use to treat the wood? Is that the problem? I’ve bought some cedar to put in and see if that helps…
Anyone?

Question by love to be a mommy of 2: Rotten Egg Smell in finished basement.?
Right now my husband, our two children and I are living at my mother in laws basement temporarily, However, since almost a week ago, I have been smelling a foul odor in the basement, and it hits you once you open the door, the problem is I can’t pin-point exactly where the smell is coming from. The smell is strong in the cedar closet, and the stairs, but it seems that the smell is everywhere. There is no bathroom downstairs, or sink, and I have the baby’s diaper pail empty. I have cleaned everything, almost obsessively to try to get rid of the smell. This really isn’t my house so I am not sure what else to do, can anyone help, or have any ideas as to what it could be?

I had that experience with a house I recently bought. During the inspection we noticed that there was a rotten egg odor coming from one of the drains (the basement is unfinished). If you can find out whether or not there is a drain in the basement floor that may solve your question. Sometimes the seals underneath the drains wear out and that leads to sewer gas backing up into the pipe… generally there should be a water trap in the pipe that will prevent this but that’s not always the case. If the smell is coming from an area with a drain I would call a plumber to come take a look at it.

Question by baximo: How can I get the cedar smell back in my closets?
I have 50 year old cedar wood closets. Trouble is, they don’t have the cedar smell anymore and I would like to get it back somehow. I heard of a solution that you apply to the wood directly that creates that smell, has anybody else heard of this or have any other ideas?
