Question by shoppits: How can I get rid of the musty smell in my old house’s built in storage areas?
I have two nice linen closet type built ins that have drawers underneath them. They are on the floor right above the crawl space. The house was built in 1925. When I put my linens in the upper shelf area they absorb a musty smell and I can’t sleep on them, I’d have to wash them before using them.

The shelves and walls inside were painted over after I got the house but that didn’t help. Below the bottom drawer on one of them is sub floor which looks like it may have openings to the crawl space (?), I could close that off I guess. And on the other one the bottom drawer was taken out and that space is used as an air return for the heater and goes directly into the heating duct.

I’m not convinced that closing off the bottom will help since they both have the smell and also some furniture I bought at a swap meet did the same thing to my clothes.

Is there something to use to treat the wood? Is that the problem? I’ve bought some cedar to put in and see if that helps…

Anyone?

It’s almost spring (finally!) and I thought it’d be fun to show you how I store winter clothes. I am fortunate enough to have enough drawer and closet space at home to keep all of my clothes out year round, but I do store clothes seasonally at our family vacation home in Utah. So, I filmed this video last time I was there in late February to show you how I go about storing winter clothes. Thanks for watching! I bought all of the Cedar & Lavender products at the Container Store: www.containerstore.com www.containerstore.com www.containerstore.com

Found cedar closet storage in How can I clean my cedar lined dresser drawers?

Question by Carri: How can I clean my cedar lined dresser drawers?
I have a dresser that my parents purchased in 1954. The drawers are cedar lined and it’s in excellent shape…I’ve used this dresser for 15 years now. I moved from California to Upstate NY during the summer of 2005 and the mover put my things in storage for me (because my family and I traveled for 4 months before landing in NY). The mover didn’t cover any of my belongings with sheets or otherwise and my stuff was in storage for 9 months before I bought a house. Now my dresser drawers don’t keep anything fresh. I wiped them down with a wet cloth and even sprayed them with essance of cedar, but after a month my clothes end up smelling very stale and old (like sheets that have sat in an old closet for way too long). This was never an issue before, so I’m assuming the drawers must have absorbed dust and what-not. My clothes (esp my sweaters) used to smell fresh…with a light hint of cedar…before my dresser was in storage. Please help!

PULL OUT ALL OFF THE DRAWERS . TAKE THEM OUT SIDE OR INTO THE BASEMENT. BUY SOME 180 GRIT SAND PAPER, SAND ALL THE CEDER PARTS. THIS WILL BRING BACK THE SMELL OF CEDER..
